About Two Harbors Ore Docks
It is a historic and active shipping port primarily used for transporting iron ore mined in northern Minnesota. This port has been operational since the late 19th century and remains a key hub for shipping iron ore across the Great Lakes. Today, the docks are used to load taconite pellets (a processed form of iron ore) onto massive ore boats. These boats transport the pellets to steel mills across the Great Lakes region. The docks are capable of loading up to 60,000 tons of taconite pellets per vessel. The docks are impressive in size, with Dock 1 standing 75 feet above the waterline and stretching 1,344 feet in length. Dock 2, the largest, is 80 feet high and 1,368 feet long. Both docks feature pockets and chutes for efficient loading of ore. The docks are a popular attraction for visitors interested in the history of the iron ore industry. They offer a glimpse into the industrial heritage of the area and the scale of operations required to support the steel industry.
