We’ve just released a 100m ultra high-resolution model for Marseille, the sailing venue for the Paris 2024 Olympics. As the location has negligible tidal flow, we model the effect of wind and the density difference in the water column to create the worlds most advanced current model for this location. Improved Tidal and Ocean Current merging.

The convergence zone between the high resolution tidal currents and the low resolution ocean currents now has more accurate interpolation, fixing inaccuracies that were present in the initial release.

You can now view Ocean Current from three different sources - Mercator, Hycom and RTFOS. This feature displays the raw Ocean Current data so you compare the differences between each of the three models.

The Evolution of Weather Forecasting

The history of weather forecasting, with its roots in early civilizations, holds particular relevance to the first sailors who embarked on perilous voyages across the world's oceans. These ancient mariners lacked modern technology but relied on their observational skills to read nature's signs. Early seafarers keenly observed cloud formations, changes in wind direction and strength, to the behavior of animals, and the color of the sky. Such insights allowed them to anticipate impending weather changes and potential adverse conditions while navigating vast seas. Their ability to interpret these natural indicators was crucial for safe passage and successful exploration.

Parameters for a Safe Weather Window

When sailing or spending time on the water, having a clear view of what is happening around you is crucial for a safe and comfortable journey. While effective passage planning is critical before setting off, prioritizing the visibility of other boats in your vicinity is essential for safe navigation once at sea.

Changing the Face of Ocean Safety with PredictWind’s Over the Horizon AIS

 (OHA) feature on the DataHub. View AIS data out to 300nm, directly on your chart-plotter and nav apps, so you can sail safer.

Over the Horizon AIS (OHA) increases your AIS range from as low as 5nm to 300nm! If you are sailing at 10 kt using regular AIS and a container ship is sailing directly towards you at 25 kt, you only have 8.5 minutes to react and alter course. On the other hand, OHA would provide you with 8.5 hours warning time.

Some chart plotters cannot display the full 300nm AIS range. For example, Garmin cuts off at 75nm.

The DataHub has access to the entire global AIS network via your existing internet connection and knows your exact gps location. It then downloads all OHA vessel positions within 300 nm of your current location.

The DataHub downloads the OHA data approximately once every minute. It is then converted into NMEA and shared to your vessel's instrumentation over WiFi.

OHA targets are displayed on your nav display in the same way as regular AIS targets. When a vessel is located via VHF and OHA, only the VHF data will be displayed.

OHA data can be downloaded via your existing satellite or cellular internet connection.

OHA also works as a backup should your standard AIS receiver fail. Ensure you are never without AIS data, which is critical for collision avoidance, security, navigational safety and search and rescue.

Two notable features of the ocean are, first, that it is completely devoid of roads and, second, that it tends to move around a bit.These features make creating a wayfinding solution for seafaring vehicles a tad more complicated than choosing the best road with the least traffic; the chaos of the weather and waves would need a tool with far more depth.To spearhead the development of this tool would take someone who was born into sailing, who was raised on an island nation, and with experience in the world’s most famous sailing race.

Predicting chaos: NZ app helps sailors navigate rough waters

Tidal currents are the horizontal movement of water caused by the rise and fall of tides, and they are the result of gravitational forces primarily exerted by the moon on Earth’s oceans. As the Earth rotates, the gravitational force from the moon results in the formation of a water bulge on the side of the Earth facing the moon. Simultaneously, a second bulge is created on the opposite side, generated by the centrifugal force produced during the rotation of the Earth-moon system.

This groundbreaking solution empowers users to navigate local waters around the globe with unparalleled accuracy, providing a new level of insight into tidal and ocean currents.

PredictWind unveils PredictCurrent

We are delighted to announce the release of PredictCurrent, the world’s most advanced and comprehensive tidal current model. Covering most of the world’s coastlines, PredictCurrent is a world first, giving you critical tidal current information in a detailed high-resolution map.

With a 400m resolution model within 90 km of the coast and a 4km resolution out to 600 km offshore, you can now see the current flow with an incredible level of detail and accuracy. In areas with complex bathymetry and high tidal flows, we have an ultra high resolution PredictCurrent tidal model down to 100m resolution for even greater accuracy.

With coverage of almost all the coastlines in the world, you can now access tidal current maps wherever you go. You are now the local expert when it comes to tidal currents! 

We’ve combined the Mercator ocean currents with our tidal currents model, so in areas with significant ocean currents, you have the most accurate data possible. There’s no need to refer to different sources, as it’s now combined in to one map.

PredictCurrent High Resolution GRIB files can be downloaded and viewed in the Offshore App on PC and Mac. The GRIB files can be used in any 3rd party navigation and routing software.

The PredictCurrent model been tested against tidal current observation stations and other current models on the market, and it shows an excellent correlation for accuracy.

The PredictCurrent data is also included in our Weather Routing and Departure Planning tools, giving you even greater accuracy. Warnings about dangerous wind against current situations are shown in the extreme weather alerts.
