East London harbour, South Africa. East London is a city on the Indian Ocean, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The Port of East London is South Africa's only remaining river port and is situated at the mouth of the Buffalo River in the East Cape Province. The original name was Port Rex. Port Limitations: The entrance to the Port of East London is dredged for ships with a depth ranging from 11m to 14m, 170m width at the narrowest part and with a draught alongside the berths ranging from 8.5m to 10.4 metres. The port can accommodate vessels of up to 245m. Draught at the various berths range between 8.5m and 10.4m (grain and oil berths). The outer anchorage is approximately 1 n.mile east of the southern breakwater but the position is exposed. Pilotage into port is compulsory from a boarding point 2 n.miles northeast of the north breakwater, serviced by pilot boat. Tug assistance is compulsory within the port. The marina, with its 5 kms of meandering waterways, quaint bridges and Cape Caribbean style homes, is both peaceful and safe to live in. It is protected by well-trained security guards, backed up by modern security systems. With a host of marine life, abundant birdlife, Bushbuck, Blue Duiker and numerous small animals roaming freely, it is a place for children to bloom and grow in a safe and nurturing environment. The marina covers 85 hectares. Construction started in 1990 and today the estate comprises 384 residential stands and 475 group development units. The area covered by water is 228,500 m² with a volume of 406,100 m³. Boats may be launched at any of the 36 slipways dotted around the estate. With the marina on average about 3 m above sea level, fresh seawater is pumped in via 11 seawater inlets and eventually overflows back into the sea. The water quality is carefully monitored to endorse Marina Martinique’s reputation as a premier competitive swimming venue. It is in the process of registering for Blue Flag status.

Procedure for ALL yachts arriving from international waters, both foreign and local, who need to clear into South Africa All incoming international yachts and/or South African yachts returning from a foreign port must register with OSASA at www.osasa.org.za to obtain pre-arrival authorisation at least 96 hours before arrival in Gqeberha. The Pratique together with a Maritime Health Declaration form for each crew member (available on the OSASA website) together with Yellow Fever vaccination status (if applicable) will be submitted by OSASA to the relevant authorities before arrival. The crew and Skipper will NOT be permitted to leave the yacht until the Port Health and SA Police have cleared the yacht. Authorities will be advised of the arrival of all yachts. These procedures will remain in force until advised otherwise. Once cleared by Port Health, proceed to Customs and Immigration (with passports which must show 6 months validity). Limitations on vessels using the port are 11m draught for passenger and dry cargo vessels, 11.2m for container ships, 12.1m for ore carriers and 9.6m for tankers, all according to berthing. Deeper vessels may be accommodated with the permission of the harbour master. Tug assistance and pilotage are compulsory.
