Hel lies at the tip of the 33km long thin peninsular extending eastwards from the western shore of the Gulf of Gdansk. The old fishing harbour, built at the end of the 19th century, is now mainly used by yachts. It is a popular weekend destination. A railway runs the whole length of the peninsular. Marine is located inside the fishing harbor, which is located on the end of the Hel Peninsula, near a large military port. It is surrounded by system of breakwaters. It has 35 berths for thr visitors with 4-4,5 m depth. Mooring alongside. Sailing warnings: Apperance of waves in the basin at strong southerly winds. Entering/leaving harbor with save speed not exceeding 5 knots, 5,8 m draught and after Harbor Master permission (ch: 10) Navigation - there are shallows close to shore. Many Polish yachts have been grounded by trying to cut the corner (numerous wrecks in area - in the depths of 35-56m and are no danger to navigation) Approaches - approaching from seaward, having cleared the South Cardinal Buoy HL-S to starbourd, steer 352deg for the head of the left (Eastern) harbour wall. Turn in at the middle of the entrance. At night, having rounded the HL-S buoy, steer for the red light on the left (Eastern) head will put you in shallow waters.
