Cloud Cover
February 27, 2025
Cloud cover is the proportion of sky obscured by cloud over a vessel or forecast area, usually expressed as a percentage or descriptive category such as clear, partly cloudy, or overcast. At sea it helps describe expected light, visibility, temperature trend, and the likelihood of changing weather along a route.
For boaters, cloud cover is a useful cue for passage planning and watchkeeping. Increasing cover can signal approaching fronts, squalls, Rain, or reduced visibility, while breaks in cloud may bring stronger daytime heating and local sea breezes. Interpreting it alongside Wind Direction, Pressure, and sea conditions helps crews time departures, choose sail plans, and maintain safer navigation.
In PredictWind forecasts, cloud cover is shown with other model layers so coastal and offshore crews can compare sky conditions against wind, rain, and temperature. When downloading GRIB files in the Offshore App, cloud fields help assess comfort, solar charging potential, and weather changes during longer passages.
