Bilge Pump
January 16, 2025
A bilge pump is a manual or powered pump that removes water from the bilge, the lowest internal part of a boat’s hull. It clears rainwater, spray, seepage, shaft-gland drips, plumbing leaks, or flooding before water can rise into accommodation, machinery, or electrical spaces.
For boaters, a reliable bilge pump is core safety equipment, especially offshore or when leaving a vessel unattended. Pump capacity, hose runs, strainers, non-return valves, wiring, and battery supply all affect real-world performance. It works with the Bilge, is often triggered by a Float Switch, and helps protect the Hull from progressive flooding and loss of stability.
Check operation before passages, after heavy weather, and before anchoring overnight; carry a manual backup and keep limber holes clear. PredictWind forecasts for rain, sea state, swell, and wind can help crews anticipate when green water, heavy spray, or prolonged rainfall may increase bilge load.
